CHALLENGE
The Orion Wallet was born after in-depth interviews with a visually impaired user, Jimmy, revealed that he had trouble telling the difference between US bill denominations.

SOLUTION
The wallet uses UV LEDs to shine light on the bill and reveal its unique color stripe, which indicates its amount & is a characteristic of all US currency.
The RGB sensors pick up this data and vibrate to communicate the value of the bill. Jimmy could use the device to make sure the change he received from a cashier was the correct amount, for example.

PROCESS
This was a self-organized project within the class Design Engineering for Social Good, where students determined and then solved a social need in their community.
Fellow student Jackie M and I worked to design, prototype, and test a wallet which helped Jimmy identify cash denominations. This wallet is still in-progress, but can successfully "see" the difference between at $5 and a $20 bill. It is currently being worked on as part of my gap year.
